Windomarket sharews Phone 8 is helping HTC and Nokia gain

MARKET RESEARCH FIRM Kantar Worldpanel Comtech has claimed that Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 mobile operating system is helping HTC and Nokia gain market share. Kantar's smartphone survey report makes a few obvious statements such as Samsung being the most popular smartphone vendor and Google's Android the most popular operating system. However the firm also claimed that Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 mobile operating system is helping both HTC and Nokia gain UK market share with the HTC Windows Phone 8S and Nokia Lumia handsets, respectively. According to Kantar, HTC's UK market share has grown by four percent to 9.1 percent, with Dominic Sunnebo, global consumer insight director at Kantar Worldpanel Comtech, citing the HTC One X+ and the HTC Windows Phone 8S as good sellers. Sunnebo also said that Nokia's UK market share rose to 5.6 percent, citing Windows Phone 8 sales. Sunnebo said Nokia's sales growth is "now being driven by its Windows 8 devices appealing to consumers, rather than sales of older Windows 7 models on promotion, which is good news for margins". We assume Sunnebo is referring to Windows Phone 8 and Windows Phone 7, here. Web analytics firm Flurry chipped in too, claiming that 'phablets' - devices that generally have screens larger than 5in - are a fad. Flurry also published figures that claim 30 percent of all Blackberry devices are tablets, which given the Playbook's lack of success makes for grim reading for Blackberry. Kantar's Sunnebo added that Blackberry's Z10 "has not resulted in an immediate turnaround for the Canadian company in Great Britain". However Kantar Worldpanel Comtech's figures should please Nokia CEO Stephen Elop, who has staked his job and the Finnish firm's future on Microsoft's Windows Phone mobile operating system.
