BlackBerry Q10

BlackBerry Q10

BlackBerry Q10

Once upon a time, BlackBerry distinguished itself by having just about the best physical keyboard you could find on a phone. Nowadays, it's very nearly the only one, as most smartphones eschew them completely in favour of more versatile full-face screens. So is there still a place for BlackBerry's USP? The BlackBerry Q10 is on sale now for around £530. Design and features Following on the heels of the full-screen Z10 with its revamped BlackBerry 10 operating system, the Q10 sees a return to more traditional BlackBerry styling, with Qwerty keyboard beneath the touchscreen, while on the sides are a volume rocker, microUSB and micro HDMI ports, plus a 3.5mm headphone jack and power/sleep button on top (no convenience key though). So far, so BlackBerry. But there are differences: the optical trackpad has gone and navigation is now totally reliant on the touchscreen with additional swiping options provided by BB10 (actually 10.1 in this case, an evolution of the OS we first saw on the Z10). Swiping from right to left allows you to scroll through the various home pages of course. But sliding down from the top offers settings or notifications and sliding up from the bottom takes you out of the application you're in and gives you an overview of other open applications. Blackberry Other innovations include the Universal Search function. This is incredibly easy to access -- just start typing from the home screen and you're in, with the ability to search files, messages, contacts, settings, BBM, Twitter, Facebook and help. Swiping to the right from the home page brings you to Type and Go -- start typing a message and then you can decide whether to send a text, email, BBM, Facebook, Twitter or even LinkedIn message. It's a very neat system and helps make the BlackBerry a rather excellent communicator, once you've climbed the learning curve to get used to its ways. For business users, there's also BlackBerry Balance, which offers a choice of two completely separate interfaces for home and for work -- data held within each interface is inaccessible from the other, which adds an extra level of security. Keyboard And so to the keyboard. Many have abandoned reliance on hard-button Qwerty keyboards in favour of advanced touchscreen versions. But for high-speed, reliable typing there's nothing quite like it and BlackBerry has done well not to fix one of the few things about its technology that's never been broken by rivals' innovations. There's a confidence to typing on a keyboard with hard keys that inevitably leads to fewer mistakes, and as ever, the angled BlackBerry keys feel just right under the thumbs and offer just the right amount of feedback. The permanent shortcuts are handy -- backspace to delete a message, or "W" to flag a message, arguably saves a little time and effort than pressing and holding or swiping. Auto-correction and word prediction are very good overall too, with suggested words appearing at the bottom of the screen as you type -- you just tap on one when you're ready. All in all, it's a great device for sending messages. The 3.1-inch Super Amoled touchscreen offers a resolution of 720x720 pixels, which may not sound that great, but it breaks down to 320 pixels per inch, which puts it ever so slightly ahead of the iPhone 5's Retina display. It's small, but beautiful, with deep blacks, rich contrast and vivid colours, not to mention super sharp detail, especially with small print. The browser works surprisingly well on the half-size screen too. It feels like it ought to be the wrong shape for browsing, but it generally displays well and the Reader mode (get it from the menu, or simply press "R") resizes pages to make them more like an ebook, which occasionally comes in handy. Blackberry Performance and apps It's fast too. The 1.5GHz dual-core processor is backed by a full 2GB RAM and there was no discernable lag when flitting between apps. There's 16GB of memory on board and you can boost that by a further 32GB with a microSD card, which you'll need to remove the battery to insert. The eight-megapixel camera comes with a large F2.2 lens and a dedicated ISP (image signal processor). There aren't many settings to fiddle with, but it has HDR, geotagging, face detection and the option to switch aspect ratio between 1:1, 4:3 and 16:9, so you aren't stuck with the square ratio that the screen suggests. View gallery View gallery View Gallery 5 items Picture quality is pretty good, with a decent level of detail and accurate colours, though they can quickly look a little washed out if you aren't careful with your light. It can handle 1,080p full HD video recording and there's also a 2-megapixel camera on the front for video calls. It can shoot 720p HD video and unusually, comes with a 3x digital zoom. NFC's on board for mobile payments or use with Smart Tags, though bizarrely it doesn't support wireless charging, and there's 4G futureproofing, though of course you won't feel on the online speed benefit unless you're on EE. The BlackBerry World app store is way behind its Apple and Android rivals (BB claims 100,000, though they're of very variable quality, and why would you want to pay for Angry Birds?), though many of the essentials are here, either natively, or ported from Android. Facebook and Twitter seem likely candidates as ported apps and work perfectly well, but there is a danger that not all apps will be ported as successfully as the originals on Google Play or Apple's App Store. The battery held up very well indeed, delivering two full days of fairly heavy use, which puts it ahead of most smartphones in its class. Conclusion BlackBerry may be in trouble, but it's not going out without a fight. Its USPs may have been largely eroded by its rivals, but it still offers additional security options for business users, and the BB10 OS is smoother and more efficient than its predecessor, helped by strong battery life and a speedy processor. Lack of apps in BlackBerry World is a shame, but its messaging and networking capabilities are strong, and if you feel the need for a hard keyboard, there's really only one to get excited about.

Moto X smartphone is real and will be launched by October

Moto X smartphone is real and will be launched by October

Moto X smartphone

RANCHO PALOS VERDES,Calif. -- Google's $12.5 billion purchase of Motorola Mobility has not been the search giant's finest hour, at least so far. Motorola lost $271 million for Google in the first quarter of 2013, and it's unclear at this point what the plan is to reinvent the division. And, some Android phone makers aren't totally believing that Motorola won't have some kind of unfair advantage as part of Google. In addition, the European Commission has been looking into how Motorola Mobility might be using its market position to seek and enforce a patent-related injunction against Apple. Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside attempted to address concerns in an interview Wednesday and let the world know that the company will be launching the rumored Moto X smartphone sometime between now and October. In fact, the entire product line of Motorola smartphones will be revamped, Woodside said during an the D: All Things Digital conference here. "We'll launch a handful of smartphones that aren't the end, but show where the company is heading," he said. Woodside wouldn't show the Moto X, which he said was in his pocket, but said it was contextually aware of what's going on around it. It can fire up the camera when he takes it out his pocket (he didn't explain how), and it will act differently if you are driving 60 miles an hour in a car. A phone that persistently understands changes has an impact on battery life. "Motorola has come up with two processors that allow you to do those things" that won't destroy battery life, Woodside said. "The ability to engage with the phone is different than competitors," he said.
The Moto X will be manufactured in the U.S., in a plant outside of Fort Worth, Texas, and employ 2,000 people, Woodside said. He added that carriers are excited about where Motorola is heading. Woodside addressed how much Google is involved in Motorola's business. He said it is supported by parts of Google, such as finance and legal, but Android is completely independent and Motorola is managed like any other partner. "We are treated as a separate company," he said. That said, Motorola is doing a deep mind-meld with Google and going for more moonshots, attempting to bring back what Woodside called the "audaciousness and confidence" of the old Motorola, which pioneered the cell phone industry and took its own moonshots, like the failed Iridium satellite project.

HTC First

HTC First

HTC First

HTC has cancelled plans to launch the First Facebook smartphone in the UK, because of a poor reception in the US. Launched in the US back in April, the HTC First is an interesting device: despite being powered by Android, the handset runs a custom user interface designed by social networking giant Facebook to provide easy access to wall messages, contacts and other features - all without having to launch a dedicated application. The software is also available for selected Android handsets from other manufacturers, but the HTC First comes with it pre-loaded. Sadly, that doesn't appear to be what buyers want. Sales of the HTC First have been extremely poor in the US, and even the news that you can disable the Facebook Home software to get a more traditional Android experience from the mid-range handset hasn't been enough to tempt buyers into parting with their cash. As a result, HTC is rethinking its plan to bring the device to the UK. According to Mobile News, EE - the network that had negotiated a timed exclusive with HTC for the handset - is cancelling pre-orders as a result of HTC deciding not to attempt an international launch of the device. "The HTC First has been pulled and will never go on sale in the UK," the site's anonymous source stated. EE has confirmed that it will no longer be releasing the HTC First, but has not given a reason. Back in April, the company's chief marketing officer Pippa Dunn had the following to say about the device: "We’re proud to have been chosen by Facebook and HTC to be their UK launch partner for the HTC First. In combining our unique superfast network with the latest integrated Facebook experience, customers will constantly be at the centre of conversations with their friends."

Apple iphone 5 32GB

Apple iphone 5 32GB

Apple iphone 5 32GB

A remarkably slim design that still makes room for a larger display and a faster chip. Ultrafast wireless that doesn’t sacrifice battery life. And all-new headphones designed to sound great and fit comfortably. So much went into this iPhone. So you could get even more out of it. It’s hard to believe a phone so thin could offer so many features: a larger display, a faster chip, the latest wireless technology, an 8MP iSight camera, and more. All in a beautiful aluminum body designed and made with an unprecedented level of precision. iphone 5 32GB  measures a mere 7.6 millimeters thin and weighs just 112 grams.1 That’s 18 percent thinner and 20 percent lighter than iPhone 4S. Image-4 Image-1 Image-2 Image-3 The only way to achieve a design like this is by relentlessly considering (and reconsidering) every single detail — including the details you don’t see. Anyone can make a larger smartphone display. But if you go large for large’s sake, you end up with a phone that feels oversize, awkward, and hard to use. iPhone 5 features a 4-inch display designed the right way: it’s bigger, but it’s the same width as iPhone 4S. So everything you’ve always done with one hand — typing on the keyboard, for instance — you can still do with one hand. On a larger canvas that lets you see more of every web page. More of your inbox. More events on your calendar. Even more apps on your Home screen. This isn’t just a larger display. It’s a larger Retina display. At 326 pixels per inch, it has a pixel density so high your eye can’t distinguish individual pixels. And as stunning as the Retina display is on the iPhone 4S, this one gives you 18 percent more pixels for an impressive 1136-by-640 resolution. Colors get a boost, too, with color saturation that’s 44 percent greater than before. So with iPhone 5, the games you play, the words you read, the images you see, and the apps you love look and feel incredibly vivid and lifelike. For big-time entertainment, iPhone 5 lets you watch widescreen HD video in all its glory — without letterboxing. iPhone 5 supports more networks all over the world. That includes advanced networks such as HSPA, HSPA+, and DC-HSDPA.

Sony Xperia ZR New Series Launch

Sony Xperia ZR New Series Launch

Sony Xperia ZR New Series Launch

Sony’s Xperia ZR has one trick that no one has been able to pull till now; it can take a dip in the pool and still work just fine for that business meeting. Sony is now taking this to the next level with the ZR, its newly announced droid, which is the international version of the Xperia A and is slated to launch soon exclusively for Japan. We suspect the ZR will be cheaper than the Z wen it launches, since a couple of key features like the screen resolution and on-board storage has been cut down – this should help bring down the price. The rest of the specifications remain identical to the Z. Let’s break down some of the key specifications and see what’s what. OS – Android 4.1 The ZR will run Android 4.1 along with Sony’s custom skin. If you’ve used any other smartphone from Sony’s 2013 line-up, then you’ll be familiar with the interface and the bundled apps. The version launched in India will most likely come with the Sony Music app and Sony LIV streaming app pre-installed. Cellular connectivity – Quad-band 3G support From the looks of it, the ZR will not support LTE in India, but we should be getting quad-band GSM and 3G support. Sony Xperia ZR A cheaper variant of the Z Display – HD 4.55-inch TFT LCD One of the biggest differences between the Z and the ZR is the smaller screen and the non-full HD resolution. The smaller screen is welcomed as it should offer better grip and ergonomics and the lower resolution should pose lesser strain on the CPU/GPU, so we can expect better battery life as well. The ZR’s pixel density is still a little above 320 ppi, so the display is well within "Retina" standards. Form factor – Chunkier but lighter The ZR is chunkier at 10.4 mm as compared to the Z’s 7.9mm. However, it is lighter by 4 g. The weight shedding is possible mostly due to the lack of a glass back. The back panel is modelled around the ZL, minus the texture. The button placement remains the same as the Z though. Connectivity – Fully loaded The ZR features all the connectivity essentials like Wi-Fi ‘n’, Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth v4.0, NFC and video out via MHL. There’s no mention of GLONASS, but we believe that should be present as well. SoC – Qualcomm Snapdragon APQ8064 The Xperia ZR is powered by the very same chipset that fuels the Z. A quad-core monstrosity based on Qualcomm’s Krait CPU architecture, each core runs at 1.5GHz. The chipset is accompanied by 2GB of RAM along with Adreno 320 graphics. Internal storage – 8GB, further expandable Onboard storage has been cut down to 8GB, out of which even lesser will be available for actual use. Thankfully, there’s a microSD card slot for expansion. Sony Xperia ZR Available in multiple colour choices Cameras – 13MP shooter with HDR video All the camera features from the Z will be ported over to the ZR, which includes HDR for video as well. Features and performance should be very similar as well. IP58 Certification Unlike the IP57 certification of the Z, the ZR boasts of an IP58 certification, which means you can use it underwater up to 1.5 m – much more than the Z’s 1 m limit. The bottom line The Xperia ZR has all the makings to be a very good handset, provided Sony prices it right. We have a feeling that the ZR could easily end up in the Rs 30,000–35,000 price bracket given the current prices of the Z and ZL. The handset appears to be just as powerful as the Xperia Z, but is better equipped in the waterproofing department. The reduced onboard storage and 720p screen is still in keeping with today’s standards, so we don’t have a problem with that. If Sony can launch the phone for a low enough price, that would put a lot of pressure on the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the LG Optimus G.

Sony Xperia L available from May 15 in UK

Sony Xperia L available from May 15 in UK

Sony Xperia L

If you are in the UK and have been waiting for the release of the Sony Xperia L then we can tell you that the unlocked model of this smartphone will be available from May 15 at online retailer Clove. This phone has some very decent specs and we have price information and more details ahead. In April it was expected that the Sony Xperia L would release in the UK by the end of the month so its arrival is a little later than anticipated. Although no pricing had been confirmed we told how Clove had indicated an approximate price of £240 and there’s good news as Clove has now given a confirmed cheaper price of £228 including VAT. The Xperia L was announced at the same time as the Sony Xperia SP and specs-wise the former is the lesser of the two. Clove expects the Xperia L in stock on May 15 and will deliver orders from then so there are only a few more days until you could be holding this device in your hands. Although it doesn’t exactly have top-end specs we think the design and general look of this phone should prove popular and the specs are still perfectly adequate. They include a 1GHz dual-core processor, 4.3-inch display with 854 x 480 resolution, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage (expandable via microSD). The Xperia L also has an 8-megapixel rear camera with 720p video capture, a VGA front-facing camera, 1750 mAh battery and runs the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system. You can find out more or order the unlocked Xperia L from Clove here and it’s available there in the black or white colour options. Clove’s price of the SIM-free Xperia L seems reasonable enough for what this phone offers and we’d like to know if you’re tempted to buy this smartphone? Let us know by sending your comments.

Sony Xperia Tablet S Getting Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean Update Starting TodayJelly Bean Update Starting Today

Sony Xperia Tablet S Getting Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean Update Starting Today

Sony Xperia Tablet S Getting Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean Update Starting Today

Before bringing the Xperia Tablet Z to light, which is arguably the best ever non-Nexus Android tablet, Sony has had to experiment for a while, releasing several mediocre slates. The last of the bunch has been the Xperia Tablet S, launched in September 2012 and received with mixed “critical” reviews and lukewarm popular enthusiasm. Sony-Xperia-Tablet-S But the Tab S is to become far more attractive than ever, as Sony will be rolling out an Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean update for it starting today. According to a post on Sony’s Community Forums, the upgrade will be “pushed out to our production server on April 18th 2013 between 9 am – 10 am pacific standard time”. Naturally, you shouldn’t go berserk if the update won’t hit your particular Xperia Tablet S by 10 AM today, given that these things can take anywhere between a day and a few weeks to reach all users. For now, the JB release is meant specifically for folks in the United States, Canada and Latin America, but chances are European Tablet S owners will get it in a matter of weeks as well. Before grabbing the juicy new software pack, remember to make sure you’re connected to a stable Wi-Fi network and your battery is above the 50% mark. We don’t know exactly how heavy this particular package is, but be sure to arm yourselves with patience, because the downloading and installing of Jelly Bean can take up to 90 minutes. As for tweaks, bumps and enhancements, you can expect to get Google Now integration, a much smoother UI, expandable notifications, Project Butter performance upgrades and plenty of other goodies. A bunch of bug fixes are to come your way too, not to mention improvements to Wi-Fi stability and a battery life boost. Be sure to go to Settings – About tablet – System Update if the automatic prompt message to download and install is delayed, but again, try to keep calm if the first wave of 4.1 updates will dodge you. Finally, if you’re not an Xperia Tablet S owner and wonder if the 10-incher is worth your attention now that it’s Jelly Beaned, know that the thing starts at $330 on Amazon, which is not too shabby. For that money, you’ll be getting a quad-core Tegra 3 CPU, 1 GB of RAM, a 6,000 mAh battery, 16 GB of internal memory, microSD support, an 8 MP rear-facing cam and a 1,280 x 800 pix res splash-proof display.

Sony Xperia Tablet S (3G) Splash-proof Xperia Tablet

Sony Xperia Tablet S (3G) Splash-proof Xperia Tablet

Sony Xperia Tablet S (3G)  Splash-proof Xperia Tablet

Announced at IFA 2012, the Xperia Tablet S (3G) is the first tablet from Sony under the Xperia branding that's also used for its smartphone portfolio (with the most recent addition being the recently announced Xperia Z full HD screen mobile phone). However, this is not the first Sony tablet; we've seen the Sony Tablet S in October 2011 and the Tablet P in March last year. Both tablets are designed to stand out from the crowded tablet market with their unique designs; the Tablet S has a unique fold design that helps in the usability and handling of the tablet while the Tablet P adopts a clamshell form factor that combines two 5.5-inch screens. No prizes for guessing which form factor and predecessor the Sony Xperia Tablet S hails from. Despite its similar appearance to the original Tablet S, the Xperia Tablet S boasts notable new features to stay relevant. Before we dive into the review, here's a quick look at its specs: - Sony Xperia Tablet S Key Highlights of the Sony Xperia Tablet S (3G) Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich 9.4-inch TFT LCD / 1280 x 800 pixels NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core 1.4GHz processor 1GB RAM 16GB internal memory SD memory card slot (supports up to 128GB) 8-megapixel rear camera 1-megapixel front facing camera 6000mAh battery 585g 239.8 x 174.4 x 8.8 - 11.85mm Price and availability: RM1,799 at all Sony stores and authorized outlets Design The front face of the tablet looks similar to the original Tablet S, with the 9.4-inch display surrounded by a rather thick black bezel. The extra space could be better used to increase the screen size to perhaps 9.7 inches across, but we feel Sony wants to minimize the possibility of Apple hurling lawsuits at it for infringing on its design patents. For some users, especially those with larger hands, the added bezel space comes in handy for better handling of the device while in active use since you're unlikely to touch the active portion of the screen. The Sony Xperia Tablet S has an unconventional display size of 9.4 inches, while most Android tablets of its class have 10.1-inch displays The unique fold design at the back of the tablet finds its way back onto the Xperia Tablet S, although the curve and thickness is less pronounced. As a result, the display is no longer elevated to the extent where viewing angle and typing experience was supposedly better as was advertised on the old Tablet S. The curved edge still maintains the dotted texture, which helps to provide a better grip of the table in portrait mode.Overall, the handling of the Xperia Tablet S is good due to its rather lightweight form factor (585g) and its slimmer fold design. Here's the comparison with other tablets of its class: Apple iPad 4 (cellular) - 662g ASUS Transformer Pad Prime (Wi-Fi) - 586g Samsung GALAXY Note (10.1) (cellular) - 600g Toshiba REGZA Tablet AT300 (cellular) - 595g The folding design is less pronounced on the Sony Xperia Tablet S. Embedded at the corner is a flashing green light that alerts you to any notification. Sony kept the design of the Xperia Tablet S as minimalist as possible, and limits buttons and ports to the two sides of the device. On the right of the Xperia Tablet S are the Power button and volume controls. You can find the 3.5mm audio output jack, SD memory card slot and SIM card slot on the left. It takes a little practice to learn how to remove the SIM card tray from the Sony Xperia Tablet S As you can see from the image above, the 3.5mm audio output jack is not covered or protected by a plastic cover. Sony claims that the Xperia Tablet S has a splash proof design but we wonder if there is a chance that water might seep into the tablet via the 3.5mm audio output jack. The Sony Xperia Tablet S unfortunately doesn't use a more universal microUSB port and instead requires users to rely on a proprietary port for charging and data transfer on-the-go. Note the two speakers that flank the proprietary port.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 P3200

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 P3200

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 P3200

Coming next in the series of successful launches of smart phones, by the South Korean Multinational Firm, is the name of post-modern Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 P3200. It has been announced in April, 2013 and will be released in May of the same year, so you do not have to wait much longer! The device is furnished with the latest features that any advanced tablet can have, viz. MMS, SMS, GSM voice communication, SIM support, E-mail, Push Mail, IM, multi-touch screen, and so on. An additional feature of the device is the Android v4.1 (Jelly Bean) OS (Operating System). Before going deeper into distinguishing aspects of this smart device, let’s have a brief description of its body dimensions that measure 7.40, 4.37, and 0.39 inches in length, width, and thickness/height, respectively. Because of this size and structure, it comfortably fits in your palm while operating it. The mass of 306 grams offers an ideal combination of weight-to-body size that is convenient to carry and easy to hold. The TFT capacitive multi-touch screen is easier to work with than the old models in the series. The 16M colors provision in it enables you enjoy excellent video quality, because increasing the number of colors in a device enhances the spectral elegance of the display. The loudspeaker option lets you take delight in open-voice, high quality and clear music listening, but it is also supplied with 3.5mm jack for using hands-free, or connecting to any other stereo system. For the sake of call alert, you can easily select any of the possible options available, namely, 64-voice Polyphony, MP3 ringtones or vibration. By using internal memory, i.e. up to 16 GB, you can easily manage and accommodate your data but, if somehow, you run short of memory, you can opt for external memory with a card slot supporting 64 GB of data. Here you can enjoy high speed data browsing, i.e. up to 21 Mbps as well as efficient Wi-Fi hotspot and Bluetooth connectivity. The Wi-Fi hotspot feature can be utilized to establish a wireless network or internet connection and remotely browse the web for whatever you like! Unfortunately, you cannot listen to your favorite FM radio programs and music on this, otherwise, appealing device. But such a negative point can easily be compensated by its support of TV-out that allows you connect your phone to a TV set and enjoy browsing data, watching videos and viewing photos that were taken by your tablet’s camera. With the help of its Geo-Tagging feature, you can add geographical information to your images, videos, messages or other media, while the Dual Core 1.2 GHz processor enables you perform all desired functions quite smoothly as well as speedily. You know GPS (Global Positioning System) is the need of the day and any modern handset lacking this feature usually embarrasses the users. But you need not be disappointed here as the GPS of Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 P3200 is furnished with A-GSP support and GLONASS where the latter is the radio based satellite navigation system ensuring utmost precision in finding a location. However, as the tablet is awaiting its launch in the near future, initially, it will be available only in one color, i.e. white but soon afterwards, it will be designed in other attractive appearances as well. Another limitation of the device is that it comes with non-removable battery but with startling power capacity, that is 4,000 mAh. Just like any electronic device that is manufactured and marketed by a company, it too has some advantages and drawbacks, but the innovative features dominate anything that is lacking in it.

HTC Desire HD2

HTC Desire HD2

HTC Desire HD2

The HTC HD2 is the world's first Windows Mobile-toting phone with a capacitive screen, and also packs the world's largest mobile phone display too. It's also the first WinMo phone to use HTC's Sense UI, previously used on the company's Android handsets, bringing with it Facebook integration and direct Twitter access, as well as masking well the operating system beneath it. Running Windows Mobile 6.5, it certainly makes use of the all the good bits of the upgrade, but HTC decides to do its own thing on around 95 per cent of the HD2. The first thing that most people will notice when picking up the HTC HD2 is the sheer size of the screen, which is justified when you realise it's a whopping 4.3-incher. Also read: 15 best mobile phones in the world today The screen dominates the whole front of the phone, reaching very close to the edges on either side and only leaving room for a speaker at the top and buttons at the bottom, meaning it's a very nice tablet-style look. HTC hd2 The buttons on the front of the HD2 look like brushed metal, and are nicely rounded and raised, making them easy to hit. There's the usual suspects on offer, with the call and terminate keys flanking the home, back and Windows buttons. Other than that, there's very little else on the HD2 button-wise. On the left-hand side, around half way up, there's a volume up/down key, which is flush to the chassis. This is actually a little hard to hit at times, as it's difficult to find it when not looking. HTC hd2 The bottom of the phone houses the microUSB slot for charging and PC connection, along with the 3.5mm headphone jack. It's an odd place to put this pair, with the common option being at the top or in the top corners, and it means a headphone jack can sometimes get caught up in the pocket. It's also hard to text in portrait mode when listening to music – we know that sounds like a pretty niche situation, but as the multimedia aspects of the HD2 have also been upgraded, this is important. HTC hd2 The rear of the phone is also pretty minimal as well – apart from the camera (with dual LED flash) there's very little else to look at. It takes a while to work out how to get the battery cover off as well, with a slight groove on the right-hand side needing to be pulled pretty hard to remove it. The battery looks pretty small, although that's probably just to do with the scale of the HD2. It basically holds in the SIM card and nothing much else, with the microSD card slot sitting away from it, making hot swapping possible. HTC hd2 The other noteworthy aspect when picking it up for the first time is the weight of the phone - it's just 157g with battery, which is pretty darn light for a phone this size. The camera protrudes slightly at the back, which can get in the way of holding it, but this is a minimal problem as you swiftly learn to shift it to a more comfortable position. HTC hd2 The phone is curved nicely on the back, meaning it sits well in the palm. And despite the huge screen size, it's actually not that hard for the average (admittedly male) palm to navigate to all the important areas of the screen, with the thumb easily called into action to hit the upper levels. In the box Keeping with HTC tradition, the box is a slim design featuring just the basic components. This means a microUSB lead, an adaptor to let you plug said lead into the wall, a pair of headphones that double as a (pretty cool with remote control for the music player) hands-free kit, and of course the phone itself. HTC hd2 We're not too sure we like the fact we only get one USB lead that doubles as both the charger and the computer connector, but with the polar bears in trouble the way they are, it's only fair we all do our bit. However, we do like the lack of CD in the box for software, with that being either available on the phone or downloadable from the HTC website.

HTC Ville

HTC Ville

HTC Ville

It seems a long time ago since we first heard of the HTC Ville and learned that this would be a smartphone launched on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. We have been expecting to hear much more about this handset at MWC taking place next week but for now we have some news on some HTC Ville benchmark tests that seem pretty impressive. NenaMark 2 benchmark results have shown notable speeds of 60.60fps which should get many people’s mouths watering. The results were brought to our attention by TmoNews and showed a minimum score of 51.10, an average of 57.40 and a maximum of 60.60. As a brief reminder of specs the HTC Ville will sport a 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm S4 processor, a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED qHD display and 8-megapixel rear camera with video capture of 1080p. It will also have a 1650mAh battery, feature HTC Beats Audio and is touted as being super slim. This smartphone looks to be heading to T-Mobile and we should point out that we recently informed readers that the HTC Ville could be seeing a name change to the HTC One S so quite how you will see this smartphone eventually appear seems in question at the moment. We should certainly be hearing more from Barcelona and hopefully will soon be able to give you all the rundown including price and a release date. In the meantime you might want to take a look at the HTC Ville in the video below, which gives an idea of what to expect. With all the current fuss about quad-core smartphones, could you be tempted to a dual-core such as the HTC Ville, especially after seeing these benchmarks?

Apple iPad mini Wi-Fi 16GB

Apple iPad mini Wi-Fi1 6GB
Apple iPad mini Wi-Fi 16GB
With the web abuzz with rumors of a new iPad 5 with an iPad mini-like design and even a redesigned mini with a Retina Display, retailers are beginning to slash prices on the device. On Wednesday, Walmart began selling Apple’s iPad mini for $299, marking one of the first price drops for the device since its release. The $299 price point is only available for the 16GB WiFi iPad mini and is the same price that Apple is currently selling its refurbished units for. The iPad mini, from both Walmart and Apple still come with the Cupertino company’s standard 1 year warranty on all of its products and accessories. However, if the iPad mini is purchased from Walmart, the customer will be receiving a new device, as opposed to Apple’s refurbished units. If a customer decides to partake in this deal, they may go through the in-store pickup process, giving them the option reserve a device online and then pick up in the store. It also appears that the “ship to home” option is also available, even though it was not when the deal originally went up. It is unclear if other retailers will begin to lower prices on Apple’s iPad. However, if other retailers do decide to follow suit with Walmart’s discount, it may be very soon, especially since Apple is expected to introduce a new lineup of iPads in the next several months.
