HTC First

HTC First

HTC has cancelled plans to launch the First Facebook smartphone in the UK, because of a poor reception in the US. Launched in the US back in April, the HTC First is an interesting device: despite being powered by Android, the handset runs a custom user interface designed by social networking giant Facebook to provide easy access to wall messages, contacts and other features - all without having to launch a dedicated application. The software is also available for selected Android handsets from other manufacturers, but the HTC First comes with it pre-loaded. Sadly, that doesn't appear to be what buyers want. Sales of the HTC First have been extremely poor in the US, and even the news that you can disable the Facebook Home software to get a more traditional Android experience from the mid-range handset hasn't been enough to tempt buyers into parting with their cash. As a result, HTC is rethinking its plan to bring the device to the UK. According to Mobile News, EE - the network that had negotiated a timed exclusive with HTC for the handset - is cancelling pre-orders as a result of HTC deciding not to attempt an international launch of the device. "The HTC First has been pulled and will never go on sale in the UK," the site's anonymous source stated. EE has confirmed that it will no longer be releasing the HTC First, but has not given a reason. Back in April, the company's chief marketing officer Pippa Dunn had the following to say about the device: "We’re proud to have been chosen by Facebook and HTC to be their UK launch partner for the HTC First. In combining our unique superfast network with the latest integrated Facebook experience, customers will constantly be at the centre of conversations with their friends."
