Sony Xperia Z2

Sony Xperia Z2
Sony Xperia Z2
Sony Xperia Z2 has something of a slump last year, following up the impressive Xperia Z with the lacklustre Xperia Z1 just a few months later. The camera, which was supposed to be the headline feature, didn't impress as much as we'd hoped, and the screen was still lacking the IPS clout that the Xperia Z Ultra managed - meaning muted colours and poor viewing angles. Anyway, enough about last year - Sony's back in 2014 and comes with an excellent phone in the shape of the Xperia Z2. Tipped to be the third of the stellar smartphone triumverate, alongside the Samsung Galaxy S5 and HTC One (M8) we were intrigued to see how it shaped up. And the good news is it's impressive. Really impressive. The industrial design is a little chunky but oozes premium quality in a way that Samsung's plastic shell doesn't, and it's a little more robust than its Galactical and Primary rivals thanks to being IP58 rated. Great battery life, strong power and a good camera all are present and correct with our new top three phones, but Sony steals second simply by being a great all-rounder. It doesn't have the polish of the HTC One M8, nor the more functional UI, but it does what's asked with top-end specs. That's what we like. Quick verdict What did Sony need to do to impress? Not a lot, but that screen and camera needed a fix as well as adding in some other features.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra vs Xperia Z

Sony Xperia Z Ultra vs Xperia Z
Sony Xperia Z Ultra vs Xperia Z
Sony has revealed its latest Android phone, the Sony Xperia Z Ultra. But how does it differ from the Xperia Z, which was, up until now, Sony’s flagship phone? It’s not quite as you might expect. In some respects the Xperia Z is the superior mobile. Xperia Z UltraDifference #1 – Xperia Z Ultra is much, much larger These days, a 5-inch phone like the Xperia Z is not considered a phone-tablet hybrid but just a great big phone. The Xperia Z Ultra trips over the line into hybrid territory. It has a 6.4-inch screen. Its bezel may be super-slim, but the Xperia Z Ultra is still 9.2cm wide. That’s 2cm wider than the Xperia Z – a phone that is already pretty massive in its own right.

Sony Xperia SP

Sony Xperia SP

Sony Xperia SP

After giving us a taste of the high-end Xperia Z and ZL, Sony has now launched the mid-range Xperia SP in India. The Xperia SP is an evolution of the Xperia S and brings a radical design—it has a transparent strip at the bottom—in a sturdy shell. The Xperia SP was announced in March and will be available from mid-April onwards for Rs 27,490. A 4G-ready handset, the SP brings a 4.6-inch 720p display in a sleek body that's reminiscent of the Xperia ZL. Sony has retained the LED notification strip that we first saw in the Xperia U. The unique strip, which sits below the display, will match the approximate colours of the album art of the song that’s playing on the phone and will also pulse with the music. Additionally, users can customise the colour of the LED notification light to correlate to their contacts. The Xperia SP has a sleek aluminium-based body The Xperia SP has a sleek aluminium-based body Available in black, red and white, the SP takes its design cues from Sony's flagship Xperia Z, which is given away by the very accessible aluminium power button. It is powered by a 1.7GHz Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor, while the Adreno 320 GPU is in charge of graphics. There's 8GB of internal storage space, but you can use the microSD card slot to expand that. The Xperia SP will run Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean out of the box along with Sony’s customisations and India-specific apps such as Sony LIV and Sony Music. Another interesting perk is the capability to hook up with Sony's DualShock 3 controller to let you play games using real controls instead of on-screen controls. To hook up a DualShock 3 controller to an Xperia SP, you simply have to pair both the devices via Bluetooth, as the controller uses simple Bluetooth protocols. After you've paired the two, you can connect the controller to the SP by pressing the PlayStation button on the controller. Around the back is an 8-megapixel camera module based on Sony’s Exmor RS sensor that's capable of shooting 1080p video, and there's a VGA front-facing shooter to take care of video chats. To improve the build quality of the Sony Xperia SP, the company has endowed it with an aluminum wireframe wrapped by a plastic casing. Connectivity-wise, the SP not only offers the usual Bluetooth, GPS/GLONASS, Wi-Fi and MHL-powered microUSB combination, but also brings in NFC. Here are the key specs of the Xperia SP: 4.6-inch display with a 1280 x 720-pixel resolution LTE, HSPA+, GPRS/EDGE Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, DLNA, Wi-Fi hotspot Bluetooth 4.0 with A2DP NFC GPS with A-GPS support and GLONASS 8MP primary camera with LED flash, 1080p video and VGA front-facing camera 8GB internal storage, with microSD card slot Sony has added a 2370 mAh battery and has also thrown in Stamina mode, which should ensure good battery life. The official stand-by time is quoted as 709 hours (LTE), while the talk time is rated at 18 hours and 53 minutes.

New Xperia from rosy Sony

Sony is set to launch yet another premium-end smartphone during the second half of 2013 in India, as the Japanese giant strives to pose serious challenge to an aggressive Samsung and a resurgent Nokia in the fast expanding smartphone market in the country. Sony had only last month launched its waterproof Xperia Z smartphone in India priced at Rs.38,990. The company said the customer’s response to the Xperia Z has been “more than expected” and added that it has sold close to 40,000 Xperia Z units over the last twenty days since the smartphone’s launch in the country. Sony now intends to keep the sales momentum going at full strength through new smartphone offerings. “We expect to launch another premium end smartphone in the Xperia series sometime later this year,” said Kenichiro Hibi, managing director Sony India. Hibi, however, refused to divulge further details such as the price point or phone’s features and only reiterated that the company will bring it “very soon”. The company has set itself a target to triple its smartphone sales revenue to Rs.3,500 crore in India. Hibi further explained that Sony is gearing up to counter stiff competition from smartphone market from an extremely aggressive Samsung, Nokia, Apple and BlackBerry. He added that the company is taking the right steps. “We will very soon introduce an EMI scheme to ease the purchase of our smartphones.” The company has also tripled its Xperia marketing budget to Rs. 300 crore for the current year and is aiming to double the sales point to 8,000, from the present around 3,000, by the end of this year. According to latest data released by research firm CyberMedia, Sony unseated BlackBerry to occupy the third slot in terms of smartphone market share in India. The research further reveals that Sony has 8.2% market share in the smartphone segment wherein Samsung and Nokia occupy the first and second slots with 43.1% and 13.3% market share respectively.
