An attorney for the Korean electronics giant says during closing arguments in a damages retrial Tuesday that Apple's patents are "very narrow."           

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Samsung on Tuesday argued that Apple deserves a low amount of additional damages for patent infringement because Apples patents are "very narrow." Samsung attorney Bill Price said Apple has tried to show its patents cover all aspects of design and ease of use, preventing companies from making "attractive" devices that are easy to use. However, the patents are limited, he argued, which is why Samsung should only pay Apple $52 million for patent infringement, not the $380 million Apple has requested. "Apple has tried to mischaracterize these patents so they are the iPhone," Samsung attorney Bill Price said during closing arguments in a court here. But "these patents are very narrow. ... Apple doesn't own beautiful and sexy." He added that while Samsung knew it needed to alter its devices to compete with the iPhone, Apple has done the same thing with new devices like the iPad Mini. "There's nothing wrong with looking at your competitors and changing what you do because of it," Price said. Meanwhile, Apple attorney Bill Lee argued that Samsung's patent infringement significantly harmed the company and that the electronics giant deserves an additional $380 million for that damage. He noted that Samsung's copycat tactics helped it gain significant market share while other rivals struggled. And he said the patent infringement set back Apple. "Apple can never get back to where it should have been in 2010," Lee said Tuesday during his closing arguments.

Fortunate Nokia went with WP, at least they are making progress even if it's predominantly in the budget smartphone space. Even if Android may be more advanced right now, it's way too heavy to run buttery smooth on budget phones. Nokia would have had to compete head-on with Samsung, Sony, LG on the high end: just consider HTC's current situation, despite the HTC One and its siblings being fantastic phones. It's not easy winning against a massive company like Samsung that makes TV's, 3rd party chips, laptops, memory, even microwave ovens; pretty much anything electronic... compared to a dedicated phone company. Numbers beg to differ. Nokia sold 8.6 million phones this quarter and Sony sold 10. Nokia is 4th largest smartphone seller in the US, and even HTC which is a very well known Android maker is behind them. Nokia just overtook Apple in Europe, and is poised to take iOS in the U.S. too. They have been making progress very quickly. Throw this idea of "nobody cares" out of your head, because Nokia is closing fast with Windows Phone.

Samsung's upcoming Galaxy Note 3 may be able to pick up the biggie phone in pink -- at least if they can wait several week before snagging it. The phone/tablet, or "phablet," will initially launch during the first week of September in black and white variations, according to SamMobile. It will then debut in pink by late October, the site said Friday, citing information from an inside source. The pink version of the Note 3 may or may not be exclusive to South Korea and Taiwan, SamMobile added. In May, CEO J.K. Shin said that the new model will kick off at the IFA trade show in Germany in September, according to the Korea Times. Both SamMobile and Bloomberg have pegged September 4 as the specific date for the Note 3's unveiling. Assuming that date is correct, the phone will likely take the stage at Samsung's Unpacked Episode 2 event, along with the recently rumored Galaxy Gear smartphone.

Samsung has yet to reveal any specs for the Note 3. But insider information leaked to SamMobile claims there will be two variants of the phone. Both will offer a 5.68-inch Super AMOLED 1,920x1,080 display, a 13-megapixel camera, and a choice of 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB of internal storage.
